All students who are enrolled in any FCS course are eligible and encouraged to join Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) - a student organization focused on providing opportunities to members to enhance both their personal and leadership skills. Opportunites include participating in competitive events, community service and travel to both state and national conferences.

FIBER ARTS (05164) – Elective, Practical Art (CTE) -- OR -- Fine Art; Open to grades 9-12, Offered 2021-22
Prerequisite: None
Class size limited to 15

This class will explore the many aspects of fiber, from “shear to shawl”. Skills covered will include wool processing and dyeing, fiber techniques and yarn skills, such as crochet, knit and weaving. Students will also study the processes involved in wool and synthetic fibers and practice both practical and artistic uses for fiber. Who should take this class? Students desiring to begin or advance their fiber skills using a variety of processes and techniques. NOTE: offered every other year in rotation with Sewing and Apparel Construction

SEWING AND APPAREL CONSTRUCTION (19256) – Elective, Practical Art (CTE); Open to grades 9-12, Offered 2020-21
Prerequisite: FCS 101
Class size limited to 10

This class will explore the many aspects of textiles and construction. Skills covered will include hand and machine sewing, and related construction techniques and design. Students will begin with simple techniques and progress into finished garments. NOTE: students may have to provide some of their own patterns, fabric and notions for finished garments. Who should take this class? Students desiring to begin or advance their textile knowledge and skills in sewing and garment contstruction. NOTE: offered every other year in rotation with Fiber Arts

PROSTART I (16052) – Elective, Practical Art (CTE); Open to grades 9-12
Prerequisite: FCS 101
Class size limited to 12

This class covers how to prepare and serve many different types of food as well as nutrition, marketing, and restaurant management through both classroom study and kitchen lab work. This is NOT merely a cooking class, but an introduction to many aspects of the food industry for students who want to learn techniques and professional practices beyond the home kitchen. Students must be able to work in a team environment

FCS 101 : ESSENTIAL LIFE SKILLS (19257) – Elective, Practical Art (CTE); Open to all grades
Prerequisite: None

This course covers a wide variety of independent living skills, focusing on post-high school job/training opportunities, personal finance (including insurance, taxes, banking/loans, budgeting, etc), communication skills, civic responsibilities, etc., as well as, family relationships/communication, basic family planning and parenting, nutrition, cooking skills, consumer shopping, sewing and clothing care, and furnishing/maintaining a home (safety, cleaning, etc). Who should take this class? Students interested in exploring their own priorities and future opportunities as well as acquire the skills needed to successfully live on their own after high school.

PROSTART II (16052) – Elective, Practical Art (CTE); Open to grades 9-12, Offered 2020-21
Prerequisite: ProStart I (passed with a “C” or higher)
Class size limited to 12

This class builds on the concepts and techniques learned in ProStart I. Students have the opportunity to explore more advanced cooking methods as well as business aspects of the restaurant industry. Students maintain a food blog and are required to present their food to the public during presentations. Students must be independent learners and must be able to work in a team environment. Opportunities are available for competitive events focused on culinary skills. School sponsored catering work, usually done outside class hours, is a required element of this course. NOTE: offered every other year in rotation with Baking and Pastry

BAKING AND PASTRY (16056) – Elective, Practical Art (CTE); Open to grades 9-12, Offered 2021-22
Prerequisite: ProStart I (passed with a “C” or higher)
Class size limited to 12

Explore the world of baking and pastry skills including breads, cakes, cake decorating and much more. School sponsored catering work, usually done outside class hours, is a required element of this course. NOTE: Offered every other year in rotation with ProStart II

FCS WORKPLACE EXPERIENCE – Elective, Practical Art (CTE); Open to grades 11-12
Prerequisite: Approval of Admin and Instructor

This course is for students who are ready to take their career goals to the next level. Students will create an individualized plan of study along with on-the-job training through a mentor and/or local job opportunity. Students will also complete classwork in workplace skills as well as career related certifications where applicable.
