    REQUIRED COURSES*

    *Students are required to take at least one math course in their 9th, 10th, and 11th grades,
    which includes the three mandatory graduation requirements of Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. 

    A variety of year-long and semester courses offer a great deal of scheduling flexibility for required and elective courses, however, this requirement must be met by all students. Year-long courses are the standard choice for students to avoid multiple semester gaps between math classes.  Semester length courses are available for those students who wish to pursue multiple elective math and science courses, however, these courses move at an accelerated pace and students should be prepared for rigorous coursework if they elect for these course selections.     ---------- YEARLONG MATHEMATICS COURSES ----------

    PRE-ALGEBRA (02051) - YEARLONG – Elective, Open to grades 9 – 12
    Prerequisite: Completion of 8th Grade Math
    Required Materials: SAT and ACT approved scientific calculator.  Minimum capability of a two-line display to show both entry and solution (e.g., TI-30XIIS). Students intending to take more advanced math should consider an SAT and ACT approved graphing calculator (e.g., TI-84 Plus CE).

    Pre-Algebra/Pre-Geometry is a year-long class that bridges the gap between Middle School Math and Algebra 1. The course will do this by enhancing basic arithmetic knowledge and further developing abstract and symbolic manipulation skills. Students will better understand the sequential nature of math by applying what they have learned to real world problems in both algebra and geometry.

    ALGEBRA I (02052) - YEARLONG – Required, Open to grades 9 – 12

    Algebra I is a yearlong course considered to be the anchor point for a worthy mathematics curriculum. Typically, 9th Grade students are making a transition from concrete to abstract reasoning, with this course designed to accommodate and take advantage of this developmental shift. Students will continue to reinforce the formal structures of algebra and seek to model real-world applications with algebraic functions.  Algebraic procedures mastered in this course will also help understand the world of science and future mathematics courses.

    GEOMETRY (02072) - YEARLONG – Required, Open to grades 9 – 12
    Prerequisite: Algebra I
    Required Materials: SAT and ACT approved scientific calculator.  Minimum capability of a two-line display to show both entry and solution (e.g., TI-30XIIS). Students intending to take more advanced math should consider an SAT and ACT approved graphing calculator (e.g., TI-84 Plus CE).

    Geometry is an ancient Greek word in which “geo” means earth and “metri” means measurement taught in the year-long setting. The definitions, characteristics, and features of fundamental geometric figures, such as planes, curves, polygons, and polyhedrons will be explored in order better understand the size, shape, relative position, and properties of space. Students will learn to interpret and communicate with classical Greek logic and reasoning in the study of formal proofs, but increasing emphasis will be placed on the connections of geometry to other mathematical disciplines, such as algebra. Finally, the basic functions of trigonometry will be introduced allowing students to manipulate and solve for the proportions of right triangles.

    ALGEBRA II (02056) - YEARLONG – Required, Open to grades 10-12
    Prerequisite: Algebra I and Geometry
    Required Materials: SAT and ACT approved scientific calculator.  Minimum capability of a two-line display to show both entry and solution (e.g., TI-30XIIS). Recommended: Graphing calculator (e.g., TI-84 Plus CE)
    NOTE: Traditionally, this is a Junior level class. Since students must take a math course their 11th grade year, Sophomores should only enroll in this class if they intend on taking upper-level math courses as electives for their Junior, and possibly Senior, year(s).

    Algebra II is designed to build and expand on the topics from Algebra I and Geometry. The course will continue to develop skills in systems of equations and quadratic functions and explore new concepts including polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, rational, and radical functions. Throughout the class we will be utilizing various graphing utilities including graphing calculators and other graphing applications. The contents of this course are important for students to be successful on the ACT and college mathematics entrance exams as well as in Pre-Calculus and beyond. Additionally Algebra II will continue to develop general problem solving skills that focus on logical thinking and reasoning.

    ALGEBRA I (02052) - SEMESTER – Required, Open to grades 9 – 12
    Prerequisite: B- or better in 8th Grade Math or a Spring MAPS score of 234 or better.
    Required Materials: SAT and ACT approved scientific calculator.  Minimum capability of a two-line display to show both entry and solution (e.g., TI-30XIIS). Recommended: Graphing calculator (e.g., TI-84 Plus CE).

    Semester Algebra I is taught at an accelerated pace in order to complete the content in half the time of the traditional course.  Students should have maintained a B or higher in 8th grade math and a Spring MAPS testing score of 241 or better in 8th Grade.  Note: Students should avoid scheduling more than three math and science semester-length courses in their 9th and 10th grade years (i.e., two math/one science or vice versa).

    PRECALCULUS AND TRIGONOMETRY (02110) - SEMESTER – Elective, Commencement Honors; Open to grades 11-12
    Prerequisite: Algebra II
    Required Materials: SAT and ACT approved graphing calculator (e.g., TI-84 Plus CE)

    Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry is designed to follow Algebra II and Geometry. We will study more advanced concepts of Algebra including polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions, taking what was learned in Algebra II and deepening our understanding of the subjects. We will also explore key concepts of trigonometry including; right triangle trigonometry, angles of rotation, radian measure, arc length and areas, trig functions and their inverses, trig identities, and the Laws of Sines and Cosines. During this class, we will be relying heavily on graphing calculators and other graphing applications.

    CALCULUS (02121) – Elective, Commencement Honors; Open to grades 11 & 12
    Prerequisite: Precalculus and Trigonometry
    Required Materials: SAT and ACT approved graphing calculator (e.g., TI-84 Plus CE)

    This Calculus course is designed as an introduction to Calculus for students wishing to continue their mathematical careers in high school. This course will focus primarily on Limits and Derivatives with special attention to continuity, rules for differentiation, and applications of differentiation. With anti-differentiation and integration as time allows. During this class, we will be relying heavily on graphing calculators and other graphing applications. This is the preferred prerequisite to AP Calculus.

    AP CALCULUS AB (02124) – Elective, Commencement Honors; Open only to grade 12
    Prerequisite: Calculus and teacher approval
    Required Materials: SAT and ACT approved graphing calculator (e.g., TI-84 Plus CE)

    AP Calculus AB is the most advanced calculus course that is offered at Red Lodge High School and is recommended for all students who plan to take calculus in college. The course places a strong emphasis on preparing to pass the AP Exam, which can earn college credit. Throughout the year we will cover three general areas: 1) Functions, Graphs, and Limits 2) Derivatives and 3) Integrals. We will focus on analysis of a graph, limits of functions, asymptotic and unbounded behavior, continuity, derivatives at a point, concepts of differentiation, derivatives as functions, second derivatives, applications of derivatives and integrals, properties of definite integrals, the Fundamental Theorem Calculus, applications of anti-differentiation, and numerical approximations to definite integrals. Upon completion of AP Calculus, students will be prepared to take the AP Exam and if they pass, may enter directly into Calculus II in college.     STATISTICS (02201) – Elective, Open to grades 11 & 12,
    Prerequisite: Algebra II
    Required Materials: SAT and ACT approved graphing calculator (e.g., TI-84 Plus CE)

    Statistics is an introductory course that is designed to expose students to the rigors of a college statistics course. This course is intended for juniors and seniors who are planning on continuing their education in college. The concepts that will be studied in this course include an introduction to the major concepts of collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Additionally, students will use the appropriate vocabulary to communicate statistical methods, results, and interpretations. There will be significant use of graphing calculators and students should have one or have access to one.
