PRE-ALGEBRA OVERVIEW:
----------------------------------------

Pre-Algebra/Pre-Geometry class bridges the gap between Middle School and Algebra 1. This course will further prepare students for Algebra 1 by enhancing basic arithmetic knowledge and further developing abstract and symbolic manipulation skills.  Students will better understand the sequential nature of math by applying what they have learned to real-world problems in both Algebra and Geometry.

ALGEBRA 1 OVERVIEW:

Algebra 1 is considered to be an anchor point for the worthy mathematics curriculum.  Typically, 9th Grade students are making a transition in their thinking capabilities from concrete to abstract reasoning.  This course is designed to accommodate the developmental needs of these students.  It is designed to enable them to grasp the formal structures of algebra by grounding them in familiar contexts and real-world applications of algebraic thinking.  Algebraic procedures learned and accurately applied will help understand the world of science, technical fields, and future mathematical courses.

GEOMETRY OVERVIEW:

Geometry is an ancient Greek word in which "geo" means earth and "metri" means measurement.  The definitions, characteristics, and features of fundamental geometric figures, such as planes, curves, polygons, and polyhedrons will be explored in order to better understand the size, shape, relative position, and properties of space.  Students will learn to interpret and communicate with classical Greek logic and reasoning in the study of formal proofs, but increasing emphasis will be placed on the connections of geometry to other mathematical disciplines such as algebraic functions.  Finally, the basic functions of trigonometry will be introduced allowing students to manipulate and solve for the proportions of triangles.

REQUIRED MATERIALS:

1) SAT and ACT approved basic scientific calculator, preferably with a two-line display to show both entry and solution (example: TI-30XIIS).  Students intending to take more advanced math courses should consider an SAT and ACT approved graphing calculator (example: TI-80 family)
2) Pencils with adequate erasers
3) Paper.  Loose-leaf or notebook with perforated edge.
4) 3-ring binder or equivalent to organize returned homework and daily notes.
